Event 4: Ad:Lib 7

A live art event combining dance, movement, speech, noise and moving pictures.

Saturday 23 April 3.30-6.30pm
RED Gallery of Contemporary Art, 19 Osborne Street, Hull HU1 2NL

In association with Compass, RED Gallery of Contemporary Art presented Ad:Lib 7, RED's 7th live art event combining dance, movement, speech, noise and moving pictures. Ad:Lib 7 featured artists Jo Ashbridge, Jill Dowse, Graeme Rose, Tom Watkins and Yol.

Jo Ashbridge is a dance maker and performance artist currently practicing in Hull and the North West, whose work is inspired by personal experiences, blending stylised dance with pedestrian movement. She has recently shown work at the Greenroom's Turn Dance Platform in Liverpool, and is currently working in East Yorkshire with Creative Partnerships as a mentor on their Undergraduate Enterprise Scheme.

Jill Dowse & Graeme Rose’s performance piece Blah Blah Blah is an experiment in language and communication in the form of a partly improvised word association game, using only words likely to have currency across a number of different languages and cultures. Jill Dowse is a theatre, music and voice practitioner, co-founder of Foursight Theatre and The Bone Ensemble. Originally from Leeds, Jill is a part time Lecturer at the University of Hull. Graeme Rose is theatre practitioner, co-founder of Stans Cafe and The Resurrectionists and a member of electro-pop band The Modified Toy Orchestra.

Tom Watkins will be setting up an interactive projection space, using cameras, sensors, mixing equipment and projections to create an evolving self-contained and self driven space, where the sounds and imagery are influenced and affected by the audience. The piece ran as both a performance and installation throughout the event. Tom is a visual artist and VJ based in the Hull area, who has worked on various interactive multimedia projects with the BBC, Ferens Art Gallery and KC Stadium, as well as providing live visuals for numerous events and nightclubs.

Yol is a visual, performance and text-based artist based in Hull. His work often attempts to combine all of these elements, resulting in what has been described as "fierce and absolute performance". The artist’s current work explores the interaction between verbal and non verbal vocal sounds alongside live drawing/visual performance, and he will be performing a site specific visual and angry noise based piece using the unique accoustics, surroundings and objects of the gallery space. Recent activities include performances at TAPS: Improvisations with Paul Burwell at Dilston Grove, London, and the Philip Wincolmlee Barnes memorial event at the Hull Adelphi.
