Embrace Your Inner Luddite

Ange Taggart Workshop

£5

Arts activism workshop with Ange Taggart (My Dad's Strip Club) at Lawrence Batley Theatre

Enjoy a day at LBT with Ange Taggart from My Dad's Strip Club as she demonstrates 'the art of reclaiming space'. Putting embarrassment aside, she will address the delicate subject of carnal knowledge of Coke machines. The comedy in the work runs very close to anger, and excites all kinds of stuff in on-lookers.

My Dad's Strip Club mostly shuns traditional arts spaces, preferring to operate in the public realm with a focus on criticising consumer culture. Working with others they are known to carry out un-authorised, issue-based urban interventions.

With the seasonal shopping nightmare in full swing, join in with this exhilarating workshop to imagine wild acts of consumer rebellion that reclaims and subverts urban space. The aim is to bring together contemporary rebels, using art as an instrument to inspire, liberate, and counteract the damaging effects of advertising and consumer culture. After the workshops, armed with a "toolbox" of tactics and techniques (and a few cardboard spanners), you'll be ready to implement a small project of your own.

This is an opportunity to explore connections between interesting individuals from a range of different backgrounds ... so we need variety. Whether you're a nobody, a somebody, a creative mutant, dysfunctional thinker, guerrilla gardener, scientist, filmmaker etc.... add yourself to the list.

Nottingham artist Ange Taggart, founder of My Dad's Strip Club, is best known for her unauthorised interventions and collaborations celebrating dissent. Deeply motivated to respond to injustice and social inequality she hates how much of art gets marketed as a ‘product'.

Embrace Your Inner Luddite is part of the UPRISING series of events brought together by the LBT to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Luddite uprising in West Yorkshire. The workshop is also supported by the Compass Live Art Initiative.
