Compass Placement Opportunties 2018
Compass Festival returns for 2018.
Animating the city with brilliant interactive live art projects in stations, markets, shopping centres and secret locations. Incredible artworks that invite the people of Leeds to activate them; to join in playful enquiry, silent contemplation, astonishing feats of madness, hospitality and communality right where they live, work and play. Check out our 2016 programme here.
We are starting early this year and are looking for enthusiastic young creatives to carry out applied work based learning placements with us.
These placements will start prior to the festival and will allow successful applicants to truly understand what goes into creating live art and delivering a festival.
Compass is committed to giving the next generation of creative Leeds talent a head start and after the success of their Young Producers Scheme have opened up their reach to the following opportunities;
1.Technical/ Project Management Placement
Over the past 6 years we have offered this hands on role which shadows our technical team during the festival. We’re looking for two placement students with some experience of, but also an appetite to learn more about, technical and production management.
These two students must be available for the equivalent of two working days (9-5) w/c 12th November and be free between the 17th and 25th of November. This placement can work around your studies. Applicants should note this placement will be weighted mostly towards logistics and production management in non theatre/gallery settings rather than technical rigging/operation in theatre settings.
2. Art in the Public Realm Placement
Compass festival is dedicated to placing work outside of its usual setting and putting it right in front of the city. We are looking for four placements to work closely with artists to facilitate their public pieces. This role will include setting up performance spaces, helping to shape the invitation for the people of Leeds to get involved, overseeing the safe and smooth running of the performance and supporting the artist in whatever way necessary.
These placements vary in time commitment but can work around your studies. We have opportunities that span two months or three days so whatever your availability in September and November 2018 please get in touch. Working with the public requires confidence and an approachable disposition.
3. Applied Community Interaction Placement
Working closely with the local community is a major part of Compass’ work and this festival year is no different. We are planning a large scale event which sprawls across the city and requires many community champions. This is an amazing opportunity to experience the realities of applied art work, co-creation and interactive work. We are looking for two placements who have a previous interest in making art with communities, are confident and have some experience in facilitating outdoor events.
This placement will work closely with the festival’s producer and requires availability between the 18th - 26th of November as well as the equivalent of five working days in the lead up to the event spread over two months.
4. Writing the Audience Placement
Effectively evaluating a fortnight long festival is no easy task. We are on the lookout for writers to attend festival events and capture the mood and reaction of the audience. In some cases this may mean taking a journalistic approach by observing reactions and documenting artists experiences. In others it may mean reflecting on your own experience as part of a greater audience. Successful applicants must attend at least 5 festival events between the 17th - 25th of November. Feel free to submit an example of your writing style when applying. For an example of the type of work you could be reviewing see WARMTH.
A reasonable amount of travel and subsistence allowance will be provided when each placement schedule has been agreed.
